Cindy Klassen back home, honoured for her 'golden' year
Receives award, meets with hometown fans
WINNIPEG, MB, March 24, 2007 – Five-time Olympic Medalist (2006) Cindy Klassen is back in Winnipeg this weekend to meet with her hometown fans and receive yet another award for her 'golden' year.
The local hero also signed autographs for hundreds of adoring hometown fans at the Kildonan Place MTS Connect store on Saturday afternoon.
"I love to race in Calgary and around the world but it always feels good to be home," said Klassen. "I'm very proud to be from Manitoba and it's always special to come home and see the fans who have supported me."
At the Canadian Sport Awards event at the University of Manitoba on Friday, Cindy was honoured with the 'Female Athlete of the Year' award. On Saturday at the MTS Allstream Breakfast of Champions, Cindy was presented with her Lou Marsh Trophy for Canadian Athlete of the Year.
2006 was certainly a 'golden' year for Klassen. She won a bundle of medals (one gold, two silver and two bronze) at the Winter Olympics; the World All Round Speed Skating Championships title; Canadian Athlete of the Year; the Canadian Press Female Athlete of the Year award; and the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association's Female Athlete of the Year award. She also set two world records.
A four-time recipient of the award for Manitoba's top female athlete (she also won the award in 2002, 2003 and 2005), Cindy has become an icon in the province.
"We can think of no better person to represent MTS Allstream than Cindy – Canada's greatest Olympian and Athlete of the Year – and we are extremely pleased to have her on our team," said Pierre Blouin, Chief Executive Officer, MTS Allstream Inc. "Like MTS Allstream, Cindy was born in Manitoba and we are both proud of our roots."
