WINNIPEG, MB, June 28, 2011 – MTS crews and technicians are working to maintain service in more than 20 communities in northwestern Manitoba affected by power outages and damaged cables caused by a severe summer storm on Wednesday, June 27. Some telecommunications services have been affected for short periods of time in several communities, including landline and wireless service, but the majority of service is being maintained with little or no interruption using MTS backup generators and battery power.
MTS service crews continue work to address intermittent service issues in several communities in the Parkland, Interlake, and Westman regions. Manitoba Hydro reported yesterday that some areas could experience power outages of up to 48 hours. MTS wishes to advise those affected in these regions that telecommunication services could continue to be intermittent in some locations during this time due to ongoing Hydro power interruptions, storm damage to MTS cables and additional service issues caused by continued severe weather patterns.
MTS will provide more information as it becomes available.
