The demand for telephone numbers has increased due to the growth of communications services and technologies. As a result, Manitoba is experiencing a shortage of telephone numbers.
To create more telephone numbers, a new area code (431) will be added using the "overlay" method. The overlay method adds a new area code to the same geographic area as the existing 204 area code. This method ensures existing telephone numbers remain the same. The new area code will be assigned only when new telephone numbers are issued. The addition of the 431 area code means the same telephone number will be able to exist in two separate area codes (e.g.: 204-555-5555 and 431-555-5555).
10-digit dialing becomes mandatory
- To prepare for the new 431 area code, 10-digit dialing (area code + 7-digit telephone number) will be mandatory for all local calls made from any phone (landline or wireless). This will create millions of new phone numbers in the province of Manitoba.
- The implementation of 10-digit dialing, and the introduction of the new area code, is the result of a decision by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). All telecommunication providers in Manitoba are required to implement 10-digit dialing.
