Company engages employees to help fight climate change
Toronto, ON, June 23, 2008 – As the official telecom sponsor of Pollution Probe's 2008 Clean Air Commute, MTS Allstream Inc. ("MTS Allstream") is challenging its employees to find cleaner and more environmentally friendly ways to commute to work every day.
This campaign, which takes place from June 23 to 27, 2008, is Canada’s longest standing commuter challenge, and aims to encourage Greater Toronto Area (GTA) residents to reduce their personal greenhouse gas emissions by choosing environmentally friendly commuting options.
Last year, more than 550 MTS Allstream employees in the GTA participated in the Clean Air Commute, reducing their travel by 260,000 km and saving 54 metric tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, while placing the company 2nd in the challenge’s “Over 1,000 Employees” category.
“We are pleased to have MTS Allstream on board as the telecommunications sponsor for the Clean Air Commute," said Patty Chilton, Deputy Executive Director, Pollution Probe. “As air pollution becomes a growing concern among Canadians, we need more companies like MTS Allstream who are willing to take action against climate change by becoming involved in events like the Clean Air Commute and also by offering solutions and tools that have a positive impact on the environment.”
Through its Unified Communications and Internet Protocol (IP) offerings, MTS Allstream provides solutions such as teleworking tools, videoconferencing and online collaboration tools that help Canadian companies improve the competitiveness of their operations while simultaneously reducing their carbon footprint.
In addition, MTS Allstream has its own teleworking program in place, allowing employees to work from home on a full- or part-time basis. Currently, 350 Toronto-based employees are enrolled and the Company has plans to expand the program to other cities.
"At MTS Allstream, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment and, through our solutions and tools, helping our customers diminish their impact,” said John MacDonald, President, Enterprise Solutions, MTS Allstream. “In addition, we are proud to participate in and sponsor events like the Clean Air Commute that support the strategic objectives of the MTS Allstream Green Plan.”
During the week of June 23, MTS Allstream employees in the GTA will help to increase awareness and reduce emissions by choosing environmentally friendly ways to work, such as teleworking, carpooling, cycling, walking, or taking public transit.
